No more drought: prepare the ark!

Friday, April 30th, 2010

After much needed and generous rains of one to two inches fell last weekend, a very heavy rain event appears likely this weekend, erasing any vestiges of drought in the Cincinnati area.  Rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, and locally higher, now appears likely between Saturday and Sunday night.  Rainfall of this magnitude will lead to localized and flash flooding, and river flooding is also possible.  Severe weather is also possible Sunday.

Emerald Ash Borer update from regional forester

Monday, April 12th, 2010

The following update is from ODNR Urban Forester Wendi Van Buren.  This is a good update, but I don’t agree with the Mariemont mayor who is quoted as saying that there was nothing which could save the ash trees from EAB.  There are legitimate arguments for and against treating trees, but treatments have been 98% effective, so I doubt his statement is accurate.  -Ron R.

SW Ohio folks:

Mariemont made the news this weekend for removing ash trees in the median of Wooster Pike.  Mariemont is less than 2 miles from the Anderson Township EAB find in 2007.

A fast and furious spring

Monday, April 12th, 2010

With snow remaining on the ground through the first week of March, then average temperatures of five degrees above normal in March and plentiful 70’s and 80’s in April, spring so far has been a lot like one of those malfunctioning fireworks displays where everything goes off at once.  Not only are blooms progressing quickly, but so are plant pest emergences.  This will necessitate adjustment of our schedules to accommodate the quickening pace and be sure things get done in a timely manner.
