Arbor Doctor December 2022 client update and latest blog postings

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Happy Hanukkah graphic with a Hanukkah menorah
And to our Jewish friends, a Happy Hanukkah.

It’s almost 2023 and we’re almost a third of the way through meteorological winter.

I attended the annual conference of the American Society of Consulting Arborists in Louisville, KY, in early December, affording me the opportunity to learn from and associate with some of the top arboricultural experts and consultants in the world.

Arbor Doctor Updates

We have already completed our early winter dormant oil treatments and we will be starting our late winter dormant oil treatments as weather permits in late January. If you still have a quote you have not acted on, it is not too late. Just send in your signed approval, or approve it through our customer portal, and we will complete the job as weather permits.

We will be mailing out our pre-pay letters in early January, offering a 5% discount for prepaying for 2023 services. These mailings will include all the services you are scheduled for in 2023. If you do not want to prepay, you do not need to do anything. We will be out at the appropriate time. If you do want to make any changes, please notify us in writing or by email before we begin your 2023 treatment program.

Helpful Hints

There is now adequate moisture in most soils although we have never truly caught up and soils are still drier than average. If you did not water evergreens in fall, you still may want to do that on a warmer day. Remember that evergreens under overhangs and up against foundations may not get adequate water in winter. This can be deadly. We recommend you occasionally dump a bucket or two of water on these in winter.

Inflation, Supply Chain and Postal Service Issues

The supply chain issues and labor shortages which are affecting everyone continue to affect us as well. One of our trucks was down for 3 months this late summer and fall due to the lack of available parts. Besides supply chain issues, things have gotten a bit better with the postal service but we are still experiencing delays. This has slowed the receipt of payments and other correspondence. If we call you regarding a late payment even though you sent it some time ago, this may be the reason. It is as frustrating for us as it is for you. We apologize for the inconvenience but it is largely out of our control.

Inflation continues at a very high rate. We are looking at our rising costs and will need to adjust accordingly as costs continue rising. We will do our best to be as kind as possible but with some commodities increasing by over 200% there is only so much we can do.

Our team updates

We have a great core horticultural team this year of Steve Middleton, Noah Riggs, Camille Rechel, and Ali Randall. Their hard work helped us to wrap up all our outstanding 2022 jobs on time this fall.

Some additional thoughts from Ron

The Christmas, Hanukkah, and holiday season is one to count our blessings and enjoy the blessings of family and faith. It is difficult for some of us to imagine that this time of year could be one of stress, depression, and even suicide for too many. Unfortunately, when sin came into the world so did brokenness. Many of us have experienced the pain of brokenness and loss in our lives. The holidays can be a painful reminder of what we have lost.

The tension between the joys of Christmas and the stress and depression is best voiced in one of my favorite Christmas songs.

“I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day”

I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play
And mild and sweet their songs repeat
Of peace on earth good will to men
.
And the bells are ringing (Peace on Earth)
Like a choir they’re singing (Peace on Earth)
In my heart I hear them
Peace on earth, good will to men
.
And in despair I bowed my head
There is no peace on earth I said
For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men
.
But the bells are ringing (Peace on Earth)
Like a choir singing (Peace on Earth)
Does anybody hear them?
Peace on earth, good will to men
.
Then rang the bells more loud and deep
God is not dead, nor does He sleep (Peace on Earth, peace on Earth)
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men
.
Then ringing singing on its way
The world revolved from night to day
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good will to men

.

And the bells they’re ringing (Peace on Earth)
Like a choir they’re singing (Peace on Earth)
And with our hearts we’ll hear them
Peace on earth, good will to men

.

Do you hear the bells they’re ringing? (Peace on Earth)
The life the angels singing (Peace on Earth)
Open up your heart and hear them (Peace on Earth)
Peace on earth, good will to men
Peace on earth, Peace on earth
Peace on earth, Good will to men
